Unit Per Transaction: What It Is And Why It Matters
Units Per Transaction (UPT) is the average number of individual items customers purchase in a single transaction.
It's important because a higher Unit Per Transaction generally leads to increased revenue and profitability, on top of providing more insights into customer behavior and preferences.
It is also key to measuring the effectiveness of sales and marketing efforts, aids in inventory management for ecommerce brands, and can be a strong indicator for customer loyalty—which impacts your store’s LTV/CAC (customer lifetime value/cost of customer acquisition) in the long run.

The standard formula to calculate UPT is :
Units Per Transaction = Total Number of Items Sold / Total Number of Transaction
How To Calculate Units Per Transaction
To calculate UPT:
1. Define a specific time period (e.g., daily, weekly, monthly).
2. Gather the total number of items sold and the total number of transactions for that period.
3. Obtain this data from your Point-of-Sale (POS) system or ecommerce platform analytics, such Shopify Analytics or Replo Analytics.
4. Divide the total items sold by the total number of transactions.

Average Units Per Transaction
According to Dynamic Yield by Mastercard, the global average Units Per Transaction across all industries over the past 12 months is 3.97.
In March, the units per transaction from Beauty & Personal Care was the highest, at 11.48—this is a 0% drop from February. In general, over the past 12 months, Beauty & Personal Care has seen the highest units per transaction, at 9.23, and Fashion, Accessories, and Apparel has seen the lowest, at 2.89.

In terms of regional differences, EMEA has witnessed the largest number of units per transaction on average (4.56), followed by Americas (3.34), and then APAC (2.95).
Across devices, desktop has been responsible for 4.3 of UPT, with mobile representing 3.87, and 3.04 from tablet.

Customer Experience: Optimizing website usability and checkout, make sure your website does not have any page speed or loading issues, and provide personalized product recommendations on the landing page or through email marketing.
