How To Rank On ChatGPT: Get Your Store Named In Its Answers

We asked ChatGPT eight questions about our own market. It named us in none. Here's what it cited instead, and the checklist we're working through.

To rank on ChatGPT, give it pages it can read, answers it can quote, and other sites that mention you. ChatGPT doesn't have a ranking you can buy. When it searches the web, it picks sources that answer the question plainly, and it names brands that other sources already name.

We checked how that plays out for us before writing this.

What we found when we asked ChatGPT about our own market

We asked ChatGPT, with web search on, eight questions a store owner might ask about selling with AI. Replo makes an AI agent for building and running online stores, so these are questions we'd like to be part of the answer to.

ChatGPT named Replo in 0 of the 8 answers. Here's what it cited instead:

  • "How do I sell my products on ChatGPT?" OpenAI's own pages: openai.com, developers.openai.com, help.openai.com and chatgpt.com.
  • "Best Claude connectors for ecommerce brands" Anthropic's pages, GitHub, and the connector pages of PayPal, Square and Zapier.
  • "Is there a ChatGPT app for building a Shopify store?" OpenAI's pages again.
  • "Agentic commerce" Stripe, OpenAI's developer docs and Shopify.
  • "How to get my store recommended by ChatGPT" OpenAI's help center and openai.com.
  • "What tools can research competitor ads inside Claude?" Anthropic's pages and GitHub.
  • "ChatGPT instant checkout for merchants" OpenAI's developer docs, openai.com and its help center.
  • "Best AI tool to build a landing page from ChatGPT" Framer, Webflow and Typedream.

Two patterns stand out. For questions about ChatGPT itself, ChatGPT cites OpenAI almost every time, so no store or tool will outrank the platform on "how does this platform work" questions. And for "best tool" questions, it names brands that publish a clear page about exactly that job. Framer, Webflow and Typedream each have one for landing pages. We had no page that said "Replo works inside ChatGPT and Claude" in plain words, so we wrote one for Claude and one for ChatGPT.

How ChatGPT decides what to name

ChatGPT answers some questions from what it learned in training and others by searching the web first. For shopping and "best tool" questions, it usually searches. That means three things decide whether you show up:

  1. Whether it can read your pages. If your robots.txt blocks OpenAI's crawler, OAI-SearchBot, ChatGPT can't cite you, however good the page is.
  2. Whether a page answers the exact question. ChatGPT quotes sentences. A page that opens with a direct answer is easier to quote than one that opens with a brand story.
  3. Whether other sources agree. Brands that show up in reviews, comparisons and forum threads get named more often than brands that only describe themselves.

For products, there's a fourth path: ChatGPT's shopping results. Shopify and Etsy catalogs are already integrated, and other stores can apply to share a product feed with OpenAI. Shoppers compare products side by side in the chat, then buy on the store's own site. We cover that in how to sell on ChatGPT.

A checklist to get your store named

Work through these in order. The first two take an afternoon.

  1. Let OpenAI's crawler in. Open yourstore.com/robots.txt and make sure it doesn't block OAI-SearchBot.
  2. Write down the questions your customers ask. Ten is enough: "best waterproof dog coat for daily walks", "is X worth it", "X vs Y". Ask each one in ChatGPT with search on and note who gets named.
  3. Answer each question on a page of its own. Open with the answer in one or two sentences, then the detail. Use the shopper's words in the heading.
  4. Add product schema to every product page. Price, availability and reviews should read the same in your page, your feed and your schema.
  5. Make comparisons easy to quote. If shoppers compare you with another brand, publish an honest comparison page with a clear verdict for each kind of buyer.
  6. Get mentioned where your customers already read. Reviews, gift guides, forum answers and creator posts are the sources ChatGPT checks for "best" questions.
  7. Check your shopping listing. On Shopify, your products already reach ChatGPT through Shopify Catalog. On another platform, apply to share a feed.
  8. Make the landing page worth the click. A shopper who taps through from ChatGPT should land on a page that answers the question they asked, with the price and the buy button above the fold. That's where a landing page builder that uses your Shopify checkout helps.
  9. Repeat the check every month. Answers change as pages get published and cited. Track the same questions so you see the trend, not one day's answer.

What we're doing about it

We're running the same checklist on replo.app. We published pages that answer the questions we were missing from, starting with what Replo does inside Claude and ChatGPT and how selling on ChatGPT works. We'll keep asking the same eight questions and see whether the answers change.

If you want the bigger picture of AI agents shopping on a buyer's behalf, start with what agentic commerce means for your store.

Frequently asked questions

Can you pay to rank on ChatGPT?
No. There's no paid placement in ChatGPT's answers today. What you can control is whether ChatGPT can read your pages, whether other sites mention you, and, for products, whether your catalog reaches its shopping results.
Is ranking on ChatGPT the same as SEO?
Mostly, yes. When ChatGPT searches the web, it reads the same pages search engines rank, so pages that answer a question plainly and get cited elsewhere tend to show up in both. The difference is that ChatGPT quotes sentences, so a direct answer near the top of a page matters more.
How do I check whether ChatGPT mentions my store?
Ask it the questions your customers ask, with web search on, and write down which brands and sites each answer names. Repeat the same questions every month, because answers change as new pages get published and cited.
Do I need a product feed to show up in ChatGPT shopping?
Not always. Shopify and Etsy catalogs are already integrated. OpenAI says a feed isn't required if ChatGPT can crawl your site, but a feed gives you more control over how your products appear.
