Can you sell directly in ChatGPT?

Not inside the chat. OpenAI has moved away from Instant Checkout, the feature that let shoppers buy single items without leaving ChatGPT. Shoppers now discover and compare products in ChatGPT, then finish the purchase on the merchant's own site or app.

So selling on ChatGPT means two jobs: get your products into ChatGPT's shopping results, and make the page they land on worth buying from.

  • A fast product page that matches the card the shopper tapped, because that's where ChatGPT sends them.

  1. A shopper describes what they need, with a budget or a photo.
  2. ChatGPT shows matching products, with price, reviews and features side by side.
  3. The shopper compares options and picks one.
  4. They tap through to your product page and buy at your checkout.

Frequently asked questions

Can customers buy directly inside ChatGPT?
No. OpenAI moved away from Instant Checkout. Shoppers discover and compare products in ChatGPT, then complete the purchase on the merchant's own site or app, such as a Shopify checkout opened from the chat.
Does selling on ChatGPT cost anything?
No fees from OpenAI. Its merchant page says there are no fees for purchases made on your site or app. You still pay your usual payment processing and platform fees at checkout, as with any other sale.
Do I need Shopify to sell on ChatGPT?
No, but it's the easiest route. Shopify and Etsy catalogs are already integrated. Other stores can apply to share a product feed with OpenAI, or rely on ChatGPT reading their product pages.
What is the Agentic Commerce Protocol?
It's OpenAI's open standard for sharing product data with ChatGPT. Through it, merchants share product feeds and promotions so their catalogs show up in shopping results; OpenAI says it will cover more of the shopping journey over time.
