Sell-through rate calculator
Enter how many units you received and how many sold. Add the weeks on sale to see your weekly pace and how long the rest will take.
Formula
Sell-through rate = units sold ÷ units received × 100
Use the units received for one product, drop or season, and the units sold from that same stock. Weekly sell-through = sell-through rate ÷ weeks on sale.
How to calculate sell-through rate: a worked example
A clothing store received 1,200 units of a jacket and sold 780 in the first 8 weeks.
- Sell-through = 780 ÷ 1,200 = 65%
- Weekly sell-through = 65% ÷ 8 = 8.1%
- The last 35% takes 35% ÷ 8.1% = 4.3 more weeks
The jacket sells out in about 12 weeks at its current pace.
What is a good sell-through rate?
A good rate sells the stock out by the time you need it gone. Weekly sell-through needed = (100% − sell-through so far) ÷ weeks left. If the pace is below that, discount or promote early, while full price still has time to work.
With 4 weeks left in its season, the jacket needs 35% ÷ 4 = 8.75% a week and is selling 8.1%, so it's slightly behind. The table shows the pace to sell out across a whole season.
| Weeks in the season | Sell-through needed each week |
|---|---|
| 8 | 12.5% |
| 12 | 8.3% |
| 16 | 6.3% |
| 26 | 3.8% |
| 52 | 1.9% |
Questions about sell-through rate
- What's the difference between sell-through rate and inventory turnover?
- Sell-through tracks one batch of stock: how much of what you received has sold. Inventory turnover tracks the whole store over a year. Sell-through tells you when to act on a product; turnover tells you how efficient the business is.
- Should I count returns?
- Yes. Subtract returned units from units sold, or a product with a high return rate will look like it's selling better than it is. Count returned units that go back on sale as stock again.
- How do I raise sell-through?
- Feature slow products in ads and email, bundle them with bestsellers, and give them their own page with a reason to buy now. Discount last, because each discount lowers the margin on every unit it moves.
