How to read your number
Sales tax is a tax on retail sales that the seller adds at checkout and pays to the state, at the state's rate plus any local rates. A $49.99 order shipped to Illinois at the state's 6.25% plus its 2.71% average local rate (8.96% combined) carries $4.48 of sales tax, $54.47 in all. The local part varies by city and county, so a Chicago address pays more than a rural one; for one address, type the exact rate.
Why it matters
Charging the wrong rate costs you either way. Charge too little and you owe the difference out of your margin; charge too much and you've overbilled customers, which states treat as tax you have to hand over. Knowing the rate per state also shows what a customer really pays at checkout, which matters when you compare prices with stores that ship from elsewhere.

Formula
Sales tax = price × rate. Total = price × (1 + rate)
The rate is the state rate plus any county, city and special district rates for the delivery address. To find the tax inside a tax-included price, divide: price before tax = price ÷ (1 + rate).
Other ways to calculate sales tax
- Add tax to a price
- total = price × (1 + rate)
- US checkouts, where prices are shown before tax and tax is added at checkout.
- Back tax out of a total
- price before tax = total ÷ (1 + rate); tax = total − price before tax
- Receipts, marketplace payouts or tax-included pricing, where you only know the total.
- Find the rate from a receipt
- rate = tax ÷ price before tax
- Checking what rate a platform charged on an order.
- State plus local
- combined rate = state rate + county rate + city rate + district rate
- Any order: the combined rate for the ship-to address is what you charge. Most states tax remote sales at the delivery address's rate.
How to calculate sales tax: a worked example
A $49.99 order ships to Illinois. The store uses Illinois's 6.25% state rate plus its 2.71% average local rate.
- Combined rate = 6.25% + 2.71% = 8.96%
- Sales tax = $49.99 × 8.96% = $4.48
- Total = $49.99 + $4.48 = $54.47
The customer pays $54.47. Backing out the tax from $54.47 gives $54.47 ÷ 1.0896 = $49.99.
Which rate should you charge?
Charge the combined rate for the address you ship to, but only in states where you're registered. Most states are destination-based: the delivery address sets the rate. A few, such as Texas, use the seller's location for in-state sales; remote sellers use the buyer's.
You only charge tax where you have nexus. Check which states you've crossed with the sales tax nexus calculator. The averages here are estimates for planning; your checkout should look up the exact rate per address.

Questions about sales tax
- How do you calculate sales tax?
- Multiply the price by the sales tax rate as a decimal. A $49.99 item at 8.96% has $49.99 × 0.0896 = $4.48 of tax, for a total of $54.47. To get the total in one step, multiply by 1 plus the rate: $49.99 × 1.0896.
- How do you calculate reverse sales tax?
- Divide the total by 1 plus the tax rate as a decimal. A $54.47 total at 8.96% tax is $54.47 ÷ 1.0896 = $49.99 before tax, so the tax was $4.48. Subtracting 8.96% of the total instead gives the wrong answer.
- Which state has the highest sales tax?
- Louisiana has the highest combined state and average local rate, about 10.11%, followed by Tennessee at about 9.61% and Washington at about 9.51%. California has the highest statewide rate at 7.25%. Alabama has some of the highest local rates, up to 11% on top of the state's 4%.
- Which states have no sales tax?
- Delaware, Montana, New Hampshire and Oregon have no statewide sales tax, and Alaska has no state sales tax but lets towns charge their own. Some of those states have other taxes on sellers, such as Delaware's gross receipts tax.
- Do I charge sales tax on shipping?
- It depends on the state. Some tax shipping when the item is taxable, some don't if shipping is listed separately, and some never do. Check the state's rule; most store platforms apply it for you once you're registered.
