Mailchimp vs Klaviyo for an online store

The short answer

At 5,000 contacts both cost $100 a month on the plan with full flows. Klaviyo is cheaper at 1,000 ($30 a month vs $45 a month); Mailchimp at 10,000 ($135 a month vs $150 a month). Mailchimp counts unsubscribed contacts, Klaviyo doesn't, so a list with many unsubscribes costs more on Mailchimp.

Who should pick which

Both send email and run store flows. The difference is your list size and what's on it.

Best for lists past 5,000 contacts

Mailchimp

$135 a month at 10,000 contacts with up to 200 flows and 24/7 chat support.

Where it loses: unsubscribed and non-subscribed contacts count, so archive them or pay for them.

Best for stores under 5,000 contacts

Klaviyo

$30 a month at 1,000 profiles, with flows even on the free plan.

Where it loses: it's $150 a month at 10,000 profiles, and email support ends after 60 days on the free plan.

Frequently asked questions

Is Mailchimp cheaper than Klaviyo?
Only for bigger lists. On the plans with full flows, Mailchimp is $45 a month at 1,000 contacts against Klaviyo's $30 a month, the same $100 a month at 5,000, and $135 a month against $150 a month at 10,000. Mailchimp also bills unsubscribed contacts.
Which is better for an online store?
Klaviyo, for most stores. It reads orders and browsing from your store for its flows and runs on 84 of the 100 brands that run the most Meta ads in our email and SMS app ranking. Mailchimp suits a store that also sends a newsletter and has a big list.
Does Mailchimp charge for unsubscribed contacts?
Yes. Mailchimp's help center says subscribed, unsubscribed and non-subscribed contacts all count toward your plan's limit; only cleaned contacts don't. Klaviyo counts active profiles, anyone you can market to, so opted-out profiles don't count.
How do I move from Mailchimp to Klaviyo?
Klaviyo offers a one-time contact sync and a step-by-step guide; templates and automations are rebuilt in Klaviyo. Set up SPF, DKIM and DMARC for your sending domain first, then rebuild your welcome and abandoned cart flows before you switch campaigns over.
What about Omnisend?
Omnisend's Standard plan is $81 a month at 5,000 contacts, under both. See Omnisend vs Klaviyo, or all Klaviyo alternatives priced at 1,000, 5,000 and 10,000 contacts.
Does Replo replace Mailchimp or Klaviyo?
No. Replo doesn't send email. It builds the page each campaign links to, on your brand. With Klaviyo connected, it also writes the email and saves it as a draft in Klaviyo for you to review and send.

We read every price from the vendor's own pricing page and recheck them. Spot one that changed? Send us a correction.
